The Black-and-White Master Print Dec 4-7, 2017 at Santa Fe Photographic Workshops
As artists and photographers, we are the channels through which a master print finds its way into being. In service of this goal, our perceptual abilities must be finely tuned and continually honed. During this special legacy workshop, Memphis Barbree illuminates the personal, perceptual, and technical skills necessary to achieve a master black-and-white photographic print.
Using an instructional framework developed over a period of 30 years by master photographer and popular teacher George DeWolfe (himself a student of Ansel Adams, Minor White, and Dr. Richard Zakia), Memphis shares workflow techniques and tools representing an artistic lineage of classic photographic practice that has been adapted to the current age of digital printing.
Participants begin by exploring the personal aspects of seeing and visual perception, all while strengthening their relationship to the camera. We spend a day learning the master print workflow and two days practicing printing skills, with the help of powerful tools supplied by Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. Toward the end of our time together, we set aside a period to discuss briefly the art of print presentation.
This workshop is about much more than printing—it’s about a the relationships between light, presence, and aesthetic authenticity. Come to study the print; stay for the practice of artistry.
The fine print represents, to me, an expressive object of beauty and excellence. The difference between a very good print and a fine print is quite subtle and difficult, if not impossible, to describe in words. There is a feeling of satisfaction in the presence of a fine print - and uneasiness with a print that falls short of optimum quality.

Manual mode on your digital camera, intermediate knowledge of Photoshop and Lightroom, and basic digital printing skills
