Authenticity – The Process of Photographic Creativity - Dec 2-3, 2017
A strange thing happened to me today. I saw a big thundercloud move down over Half Dome and it was so big and clear and brilliant that it made me see many things that were drifting around inside of me. Things that relate to those who are loved and those who are real friends. For the first time I know what love is, what friends are, and what art should be. - Ansel Adams
Authenticity is the single most important attribute an artist and photographer can learn and possess. It is a process of working from within that allows us to see and reach beyond the surface of things. It is the path to creating a masterwork—an image that speak of a moment, beyond the moment, carrying the past onward to the future.
The way to a fulfilling creative life as a photographic artist is reached by emptying ourselves of unnecessary impediments—such as any pre-occupation with technicalities of cameras, settings, rules of composition—and stepping into the present to connect with the place and moment before us. It’s stopping the busy, critical mind and accessing the mind of innocence to feel the true nature of what we are photographing.
Memphis begins the workshop by reviewing the fundamentals of photographic "seeing,” and the skills necessary to step beyond just recording a scene or subject. She covers the basic technical problems that stand between photographers and masterful expression—in both the capture and post-processing stages—and the solutions and tools she has found most effective.
